Tokyo International Anime Fair 2010

By j1m0ne, March 29, 2010 12:14 AM

One of the items on my itinerary for Japan trip #1 in 2010 was a visit to Tokyo International Anime Fair (TAF) 2010, an event held over 4 days every year in March. This year’s event was held from 25-28 March with the first two days for business seminars and the last two open to the public. Venue was again, Tokyo Big Sight in Ariake. Anyway, just mentioning stuff in brief while it’s still fresh in my memory.

Spring 2010 Anime Season Guide

By j1m0ne, March 25, 2010 11:32 PM

The guide is back again after a season’s hiatus but wow. People are rushing these things more and more…personally I would never even bother to look up the next season’s shows until the current one is done, so heaven knows who’s reading those written in January.

Obviously, these are all my own opinions. I have strong watching preferences (strictly no mecha, no harem, no magical girls) but I do keep an open mind. After all, who coulda thought that Hanamaru Kindergarten would end up one of the hits of last season? Certainly not by just reading these silly season previews I reckon.

Guess the Anime Song! 2000-2009

By j1m0ne, March 20, 2010 11:56 PM

For some reason everyone and their monkey was playing that old Identify the Anime Song! video from Nico Douga a month or two ago – I’d tried it out before but found it incredibly frustrating because of the large number of character songs and Lucky Star stuff (which is like a death knell for me) included. I guess it was limited by the time scale (2005-2008)…

I won’t exactly claim to be an anisong expert but I thought I’d have a go at doing what I think is a better and more balanced list of songs across various genres of anime. These are all songs from my own library that I’ve been accumulating over the last 10 or so years and the selection is split roughly 20 songs for every year to make up a total of 200. It’s a bit like a walk through a selection of the decade’s best (or maybe worst) anime theme songs, if you will.

I tested part of the quiz on townberry and alarmingly she only recognised something like 4 out of the first 50 songs so I don’t know whether that reflects badly on me or her ~_~

So if you can spare 34 minutes, grab a notebook and pen/pencil and get thinking/guessing!

Here we go. Link to answers after the jump.

or if Vimeo is being arsey, Youtubes part 1, 2, 3 and 4.

Excuse me doctor, but I’ve got a nasty bout of…

By j1m0ne, March 16, 2010 9:19 PM

For a couple of days, the interwebs have been awash with the news that Hirano Aya had landed in hospital with a bout of gastroenteritis. It appears to have been serious enough to knock her out for at least a couple of days – she wrote no new blog entries between the 6th and 13th of this month. The worrying thing is that this isn’t the first we’ve heard of Aya’s escapades in the medical wards, with previous flu encounters, removing her appendix, fainting spells and whatnot. You’d think she was nearer to 60 than 20 with her history of ailments, the poor girl. Sadly, her current woes have forced the cancellation of her April fanclub event and is perhaps also the reason behind the cancellation of the Haruhi live event. Wishing her a speedy recovery…

I would laugh, but then similar things have been happening to me recently. Unexplained aches & pains, ulcers, regular bouts of flu…maybe it’s a sign I’m not quite as sprightly as I was 10 years ago (I’m only 25, mind you) and shouldn’t be attempting to do silly things that may twist my nerve endings the wrong way around. Anyhow, I went to the doctor today to check up on the persistent shooting pain in my neck and her diagnosis – bad posture, too much computering, too much mahjong. Hahaha!

Saiga Mitsuki, How GAR Thou Art…

By j1m0ne, March 13, 2010 12:17 AM

I’ve been rather amused by recent comments on my Seiyuu Awards posts referring to Saiga Mitsuki’s physical appearance. The general consensus seems to be that she’s more ‘handsome’ than most of the male seiyuu population. Rather bishonen, if you like.

Making An All-Girl Seiyuu Idol Band

By j1m0ne, March 11, 2010 12:12 AM

I read with interest Animelo’s recently announced ambitious plan – in addition to their regular double weekend headliners in August, they’ll be expanding the whole shindigs to include extra dates – a ‘Girl’s Night’ as well as an overseas live in Shanghai later in 2010. The former rather intrigues me since the website blurb promises everything female – girl performers, girl backing bands and even a girls-only audience (how they hope to implement that I do truly wonder), it’s like a yuri fan’s wet-dream come true!

So I had this bright and brilliant idea – how about trying to put together a female seiyuu idol band? Rather than the boring prospect of getting a bunch of solo female performers singing along to a female Animelo band, wouldn’t it be more fun if we could throw a bunch of girl seiyuu together with instruments in tow? It’d be something like the Sakurakou K-On Bu but with actual musical talent and singing ability. Not knocking Hikasa et al but if you’ve heard those comical K-ON! seiyuu recordings… you know what I mean.

It seems an impossible task to get a list of names in, but I can at least try.

4th Seiyuu Awards Pictures

By j1m0ne, March 7, 2010 11:50 PM

A quick compilation of all the photos from the Seiyuu Awards, from both news sites and blogs that have been doing the rounds. The blog shots are always more fun since they’re informal and you can see the seiyuu in all their goofy glory.

4th Seiyuu Awards Results

By j1m0ne, March 6, 2010 6:44 PM

They got good at not letting results leak early this year! That means I have to pay attention during awards time – there’s live streaming of the event online this year, though still not on TV… anyway, results first and I’ll update the post with pictures later when the news sites start reporting on the Awards.

So let’s see how many I got correct this time by my amazing powers of prediction (refer to my kujibiki post, and my predictions post). Like all lame economists, I usually get them all wrong and only try to explain afterwards why I got them wrong. This year, I’m taking a much more laidback view and will enjoy the announcements for what they are, be it popularity poll or rigged connections or whatever.

Here we go!

Tomatsu Haruka’s 2nd Photobook – High Touch!

By j1m0ne, March 1, 2010 11:40 PM

As promised, a quick look through Tomacchan’s second photobook release. It’s been just 4 months since the release of HARUKAs so it’s no wonder people grumble about over-exposure on a Hirano Aya level. Anyway, I’ve got two copies of High Touch in this time around so there’s a 33.3% chance I may pull one of them apart to scan (but don’t hold your breath). Nobody did the deed for the first PB as far as I remember…
