Guess the Anime Song! 2000-2009
For some reason everyone and their monkey was playing that old Identify the Anime Song! video from Nico Douga a month or two ago – I’d tried it out before but found it incredibly frustrating because of the large number of character songs and Lucky Star stuff (which is like a death knell for me) included. I guess it was limited by the time scale (2005-2008)…
I won’t exactly claim to be an anisong expert but I thought I’d have a go at doing what I think is a better and more balanced list of songs across various genres of anime. These are all songs from my own library that I’ve been accumulating over the last 10 or so years and the selection is split roughly 20 songs for every year to make up a total of 200. It’s a bit like a walk through a selection of the decade’s best (or maybe worst) anime theme songs, if you will.
I tested part of the quiz on townberry and alarmingly she only recognised something like 4 out of the first 50 songs so I don’t know whether that reflects badly on me or her ~_~
So if you can spare 34 minutes, grab a notebook and pen/pencil and get thinking/guessing!

I’ve been itching to do one of these. One of the forums I check regularly used to have a guy who would pop these quizzes (10-20 songs at a time) on a regular basis, and it was fun. He stopped though…

Doesn’t mean it’s a good thing! Or maybe I’m spending more time on this than I am suppose to. Typically I’d hear something, and take 15-60 seconds to try to remember what/where it’s from and write it down. And there’s the stray few that will take a lot longer. That adds up :p

I’m not sure what I should think, I’m no where as much as a freak as I am. Though I recognize a LOT of them as the tune but I can’t think of their name or where they are from. I just sing along though, hah.

Doesn’t help that I just woke up and have the memory of a goldfish.
I can’t say I watch anime enough though, at least not enough that matters now that I care enough to pay attention to the OP/ED/Character songs. Weird mix because when I finally started getting quite into anime, I also got into galge/eroge/visual novels whatever you like to call it that to the point where it takes up my anime time.
If you were to do Visual Novel/Galge/Eroge songs of 2000 – 2009, I might get more. lol
Hehe passing mark, if it was eroge songs I’d probably fail miserably at naming the game involved ^^;
After 60 entries I’m at 22 at naming at least the series the song is from. If we pin down to the specific OP/ED then I’m at 18/60.
Too lazy to finish~ And I know more songs than I know anime at this point, so the quiz is sort of frustrating.

82/200 ^^; Not as much as I figured I’d manage to recognize =x But I suppose some of the older songs put me off, ’cause I didn’t get into anime all that long ago XD (what? you expect an 8 year old (i.e. me 10 years ago) to watch ecchi stuffs? XD)
Oh yeah, some songs were so frikkin’ nostalgic too ;A; Like the Full Moon wo Sagashite one (that anime still holds my rank of most-episodes-watched-in-one-day XD I mean, I watched almost the entire thing in one sitting a few years ago lol)

If it’s only recognizing whether I heard the song or not, I got 67/100. If only counting the number of songs I managed to write something about, I got 54/100.
I’m glad I’m not as weird as I thought I would be. I indeed watch too much anime, or should say, it’s the only thing I watch. I still fail at life anyway…I was surprised at some of the song choices…

Most of the stuff I ended up recognizing was from the past couple years — makes sense given that I didn’t really get into this kind of stuff until something like 2.5-3 years ago.
Ended up with 35/200 properly named, though it confused me a little bit since I could usually tell the artist from his/her/their voice(s), but I couldn’t connect it with the series.
Yeah I think connecting the song with the series is a bit harder. Usually requires a heck of a lot of anime watching I think.
Well, that’s 58 for me which is enough to pip me over the point that makes me feel even remotely competent. And for what it’s worth, I thought this sampling was a fairly representative set of anisongs unlike the NND version. The character songs really cheesed me off.
Yeah the character songs lol. Thanks for doing the quiz, and I’d say 58 is a very respectable score indeed.
What counts as “getting” it? Just knowing the show it’s from? Knowing if it’s the OP or ED? Knowing if it’s the OP or ED *and* the title of the song?
I’m at #11 right now and can pin down a series for 6, but I don’t usually pay attention to song titles unless it’s an absolute favorite.
Yeah I would venture knowing ‘Series XXX OP/ED’ would be enough as knowing it. I can’t say I 100% remember the titles for everything either…
The Lucky Star songs helped me to get >50% at the Niconico one, but this time I knew it would be hard because you have so different taste than me (+ my anime experience is just 2.5 years)

Heh 41 is a pretty good score if you cut out half the stuff you didn’t know from 2000-2004
Oh, well, when I picked up anime, I wasn’t watching ongoing shows at the time, rather I got the ‘classics’ recommended by my friends (such as love hina, vandread, chobits, cowboy, etc).
But yeah, the stretch from 114 to 150 was pretty brutal for my score
(I got about 88 in the nico one)
54/200 there were some I recognized singers only, others I recognized animes only. Some I knew I’d never heard but recognized the singer regardless.
The longest stretch I went without knowing a song was 23 between 125 and 148. Though I made a lot of notes of singers and wanting to know some of the songs but no definite answers

I guess the problem with a lot of anisong artists (CooRie, angela etc) is that a lot of their songs sound similar~~
Thanks for putting this together! I love these song-guessing games. Ended up with 73/200 – 67 answers from >= 2005. You can easily tell when I started watching anime!
But wow, there’s some pretty obscure stuff in here I didn’t think I’d remember that easily. Like the Yoshinaga-san’chi ED or the Himesama Goyoujin ED. How’d you even get the idea of digging them up anyway ^^’
…and, um, 215/300 on the Niconico one. I don’t really know if I should be proud of that result! I guess it was to be expected since it starts in 2005 though. (Of course, I also missed all the Lucky Star songs and half of the Haruhi ones…)
Lol the Hime-same Goyojin ED is a personal favourite ^^; That Nico Nico score is pretty crazy btw :O

I agree that this is a more representative list than the last one, which was heavily weighted towards series that had multiple character songs.

As one who’s only interested in “long lifespan” anime game songs, I can say this 200 is overall better than the other 300. I can recognize 40 and there are about 15 forcing me to see the answer.

I only managed to get 44…I got 70 on the Nico Nico one, probably because I mass downloaded all Haruhi songs a long time ago. :’D

Lol it’s ok being normal. 10-second samples are a pretty hard way to identify series or artists unless you’re really familiar with them
olawd, I’ve only been really watching anime the past almost three years.
If I didn’t get 079, that would be just sad…derp, I can only recognize over 60 by song alone. Out of that, nearly 50 are ones I can name the anime to. Naming the anime, song title and artist… Maybe five.

25 I really got first time through, but there were a load that I marked as familiar that I -should- have gotten if I thought about it more. Maybe around 40 I could confidently say I’d heard before and sound familiar.
That’s the thing with these type of quizzes, you get the feeling you’ve heard somewhere before but just can’t quite place it…

Oh errr I think Saito Chiwa is in there a couple of times, unintentionally. It’s more the creators than the artists that have a larger presence – count the number of Kajiura, Kanno and I’ve songs for example.

A score of Lucky 77! Considering that I’m watching less and less anime as time goes by, I should be back in the normal range in… well never, maybe. Guess I’ll be watching more trashy American reality shows as per your advice

Anyway, I’d like to commend you for throwing out the really big-name songs in favor of the slightly less-known but still recognizable ones, like staple stable/Love & Roll instead of Kimi no Shiranai Monogatari, Ashita he no Melody instead of Catch You Catch Me etc. Makes things a lot more fun.

Quite a lot that I did recognise hearing but can’t remember immediately where and what. I am actually embarrassed because I managed to recognise Princess Primp but failed to identify Soramimi Cake. Hurr.

Definitely a better and balanced quiz than the NND one.
I haven’t tried the NND quiz, but this one couldn’t have been more timely with an exactly identical contest being held by my school’s anime club tomorrow.
I guess I was average with 71 recognisable songs and among them 52 being linkable to an anime since I was doing the quiz on the fly. Definitely less if I were to list the artist/title/series.
Thanks for your efforts, it’s certainly a balanced list IMO. Also it gave me more fodder for my music player.
Man there were so many songs that I didn’t recognize. I got 66/200. There were only like 5 or 6 songs that I knew the exact name, anime, and singer.
This is fun^^ but also sort of tiring to go through half an hour for a quiz. 69/200 – but clearly better than the Haruhi/Lucky Star-swarmed quizzes. Well done on making such a balanced quiz.
Anyway, typos i believe, 88 should say “Over The Sky” instead of “Into~” and 179 ED rather than OP.

I could name 9 but I knew the anime and artist of around 40. YAY I’m normal. I can’t believe I’m so bad at remembering the names, even though I had been looping some of those songs over and over again.
